California Has First Moment of 100% Renewable Power Generation

Yesterday, for the first time, for a brief moment, California generated 100% of its electricity demand from renewable sources.

The California Independent System Operator was able, for the first time ever, to meet all of California’s electrical energy needs completely from renewable wind, solar, and other renewables, without even needing nuclear!

Sure, this milestone only lasted for a brief moment, measured in minutes, not hours. And it’s also true that, for operational reasons, California’s nuclear, some gas, and many hydro sources were still actually running (and exporting their electricity), BUT STILL. Here, we’re about victories. And if you were at home listening to Guns ‘N Roses on your Sonos at roughly 3pm PT on April 30th, then you can feel comforted that 100% of the electricity driving that sweet, sweet sounds came from renewable resources. Go you!

Next up for California: deploying more renewable sources and also investing in energy storage so we can enjoy some of this nice, clean power at night, after Mother Nature has turned out the lights.
